Cervical radiculopathy, also known as a pinched nerve, occurs when a nerve in the neck becomes compressed or irritated wherever it branches away from the neural structure, resulting in pain radiating into the shoulder as well as muscle weakness and numbness in the arm and hand. Cervical radiculopathy is commonly caused by aging-related changes in the spine, such as inflammatory disease. A herniated disc is most commonly caused in younger people by a sudden injury. Conservative treatment, such as medication and physiatrics, usually works well for cervical radiculopathy. Cervical radiculopathy is most generally caused by aging-related changes in the spine or an injury that results in a herniated or bulging intervertebral disc. Ageing-related changes As we age, the discs in our spine lose height and begin to bulge. They also lose water content, begin to dry out and stiffen. As a result of this disadvantage, the area of disc space subsides or collapses and loses height. As the discs lose height, the vertebrae become closer together. In response to the collapsed disc, the body fortifies it by forming additional bone around it, known as bone spurs. These bone spurs contribute to the stiffening of the spine. They will also pinch the nerve root and narrow the foramen, which are small openings on all sides of the vertebral column through which the nerve roots exit.
