Sciatica is the medical term for pain that occurs along the sciatic nerve's path. The sciatic nerve travels from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. A herniated disc or an overgrowth of bone pressing against a section of the nerve are the two most common causes of sciatica. This causes swelling, pain, and frequently some numbness in the affected leg. Although sciatica pain can be excruciatingly painful, the majority of cases improve with treatment in a few weeks. People with severe sciatica, severe leg weakness, or bowel or bladder changes may require surgery. There are many places along the nerve pathway where sciatica pain can occur. Particularly likely to be followed is a path from the low back to the buttock, the back of the thigh, and the calf. The pain can be anything from a dull ache to sharp, burning pain. On occasion, it can feel jolting or electric. It can get worse with coughing, sneezing, or extended sitting. Usually, sciatica only impacts one side of the body. In addition, some people report feeling tingly, numb, or having weak muscles in their legs or feet. One part of the leg may be in pain, while another part of the leg may be numb.
